Discover what’s blooming In The Garden this winter.

Winter in Southern California brings softer light, cooler mornings, and the quiet reset our gardens need to thrive through the year. While temperatures typically don’t drop to freezing, there are still some key considerations for growing and maintaining a beautiful lush garden through the cooler months. Here are some helpful Sustainable Landscapes LA hints:

Refresh soil with organic compost + fertilizer: Winter is the season to nourish the garden. Add a light layer of fertilizer, compost and mulch. Pepin Plant Food makes this easy.

Prune fruit trees + perennials: Cool mornings are ideal for pruning citrus, stone fruits, and overgrown herbs.

Take advantage of winter rain: Turn off irrigation during storms and let nature water for you. Find your perfect harvest basket here for gathering citrus after the rain.

Refresh outdoor pots + containers: Swap summer plants for hardy natives and herbs. Check out our vessel collection for herbs or dried arrangements.

Plant herbs + greens: Lettuce, kale, parsley, and snap peas thrive in the winter. Our pot collection is perfect for kitchen herbs.

Favorite Winter Plantings -

Cooler Season Crops: This is the perfect time for planting leafy greens (lettuce, spinach, kale), brassicas (broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage), root vegetables (carrots, radishes, beets), and peas (sugar snap & snow).

Winter Herbs: Herbs like parsley, thyme, rosemary, and dill thrive in the cooler weather. They might need a little extra protection during the coldest nights but generally do well.

Native Plants: Winter is the perfect time to plant California natives like deer grass, Cleveland sage, toyon, buckwheat, and blue fescue. Sprinkle or sow in those wildflower seeds!

Some Winter recipes on repeat: Air fried salmon, brown rice & roasted kabocha squash. This Erewhon Organic Kale and White Bean Salad. I've been needing 3pm Matcha Lattes from using Malk Almond Milk & Rockys Ceremonial Grade Matcha.

Winter Garden Attire: I have transitioned into my favorite gardening boots which are actually riding boots from Boot Barn. They are great for any weather and condition. My trusted Uniqlo puffer vest with a long sleeve thermal. On warmer winter days, a vintage fleece from General Store does the trick.
